Cash Injection to Boost Sport and Fitness

FAMILIES in five Northumberland towns and villages can look forward to improved sports, health and community facilities following a pounds 1.4m investment pledged by local council chiefs.

District councillors have promised an pounds 870,000 cash boost for new leisure and fitness provision in Alnwick, Rothbury and Longhoughton, as well as confirming pounds 555,000 funding for previously agreed schemes in Alnwick, Amble and Shilbottle.

Alnwick District Council is to contribute pounds 510,000 - the total cost of building an extension to the town's pounds 7m Willowburn sports and leisure centre - after the project failed to secure Big Lottery cash.

The extension will create studio space for activities such as aerobics, dance and martial arts, which will free up the main sports hall for other uses and open up the centre to a wider public.

In Rothbury, a pounds 255,000 council contribution will allow work to start on the second phase of the Coquetdale Healthy Living Centre at Dr Thomlinson Middle School. …
