Living Fashion: Big Knits Make for Cosy Autumnal Afternoons; Vicky Pepys Bigs Up Stitches on the Eve of National Knitting Week

KNITTING has been a hot trend for quite a few seasons now but it's taken a hot Brit designer to take it to completely new heights and textures this Autumn.

Giles Deacon used the biggest needles to create the biggest stitches we've ever seen for his current Giles collection and it's a look that's created a few influential ripples as ideas filter down to the high street.

Of course Giles wasn't the only designer to create some fabulous big knit textures; other Brit labels like Stella McCartney, Burberry and Pringle all 'did' knit to great effect but Giles was perhaps the greatest adventurer into wool. Even the bobbles on the edge of his scarves were the size of a grapefruit!

Big knits are excellent for this time of year, warm enough for a slight chill in the air yet airy enough if the sun suddenly shines; a perfect betwixt season garment that looks thoroughly updated by being worn 'cinched-in' with a new wide belt and with contrasting 'thin' bottoms, either brightly coloured or toning opaque tights, thin cigarette pants or a slim pencil skirt for the wide/thin contrasts.

Using these big knits as a coat can also create a 40's feel with your new Veronica Lake style hairdo, worn with a close fitted top tucked into wide legged trousers with the same cinched in waist.

A slightly un-glamorous but necessary purchase this season has to be a defuzzing tool The De-fuzzer, pounds 4.25 for two from Lakeland, which is back by popular demand, for the inevitable pilling that general wear causes.

Although most of these styles use yarns that can even be machine washed, pilling is still enemy number one and pre-ages even the most indestructible looking knit.
