THE first contested witnesses will give evidence this week at the Dianainquest, at the start of what is certain to be bitterly-fought proceedings.

Court officials are keeping the official witness list under wraps, saying thateven the coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, is uncertain of the final line-up.

Subpoenas may have to be issued, although these summonses have no power toforce a witness residing abroad to attend. A series of potential witnesses mayhold the key to the case.

MOHAMED FAYED His allegations that his son Dodi died because of a plotinvolving MI6 and Prince Philip are at the centre of the inquest. If called hemust convince jurors of a complex chain of events and refute any suggestionsthat his security staff 's failures were to blame.
