More Post Strikes as Peace Talks Fail

THE post dispute worsened today with more strikes ordered for next weekand a warning of more to follow.

Talks to resolve the dispute ended without agreement late last night with eachside condemning the other for the breakdown.

Up to 130,000 postal workers today remained on strike for the second half of a48-hour stoppage which ends at 3am tomorrow.

Businesses, which are losing millions of pounds a day, and the public now facea third week without a service.

The new selective programme of rolling 24-hour strikes will begin next Mondayand last until Friday 19 October. They are designed to cause maximum disruptionwhile ensuring workers lose only one day's pay.

A call from Gordon Brown for staff to return to work was condemned by membersof the Communication Workers Union.

It has rejected Royal Mail's offer to increase pay by 6.9 per cent over twoyears saying it is conditional on "unacceptable strings including a reductionin pensions benefits". …
