BETTE Davis famously remarked: "If you have never been hated by your child, you have never been a parent."

In the modern age, overworked mothers and fathers avoid the enmity by passing their pride and joy to a nanny or au pair, returning home when the youngsters have run themselves ragged.

When The Nanny Diaries was published in 2002, authors Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus caused ripples of speculation with their satirical portrayal of an anonymous Park Avenue family, referred to cryptically as Mr and Mrs X.

For their disappointing film version, writerdirectors Sheri Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini stylise the nanny's journey of selfdiscovery as an anthropological study, viewing characters as archetypes who might populate a display case in the Museum of Natural History.

The class divide between nanny and her employers has been widened, plus there are curious fantasy sequences with an imaginary red umbrella that allows the heroine to soar over rooftops.

College graduate Annie Braddock (Johannson) would love to pursue a career in anthropology but it won't pay the bills.

"If you really want to run around in grass skirts, make enough money to go to Club Med," advises her mother Judy (Murphy). …
