DID YOU FILE AN EXTENSION ON YOUR TAXES? LISTEN UP

The Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers who filed for extensions on their 2006 federal income tax returns that the deadline is approaching. Taxpayers who took advantage of the six-month extension have until Monday to file their returns.

The IRS is urging taxpayers to use the IRS e-file system to file their returns electronically, to ensure accuracy and ensure that the returns will be filed on time.

About 637,000 Floridians requested the six-month extension to file returns, the IRS said.

GENEVA - Major airlines have agreed on a standard that will allow travelers to check in using a bar code sent to their cell phones, the International Air Transport Association said Thursday.

Passengers will register their cell phone number when buying a ticket and receive a bar code by text message, the group representing most commercial carriers said.

Check-in staff will scan the bar code directly from cell phones, doing away with the need for a boarding pass. Alternatively, passengers can also received the code by e-mail and print it out.

IATA said the move would help the industry phase out paper tickets by 2010 and save more than $500 million a year.

WASHINGTON'S CHECKBOOK LOOKS A LITTLE LESS RED

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration reported Thursday that the federal budget deficit fell to $162.8 billion in the just-completed budget year, the lowest amount of red ink in five years.

The administration credited the president's tax cuts for helping generate record-breaking revenues but warned of an approaching "fiscal train wreck" unless Congress deals with unsustainable growth in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
