PONTE VEDRA BEACH - The most popular name for the new high school under construction just west of the Intracoastal Waterway is Ponte Vedra High School, according to results of a poll released this week.

In an online poll set up by the school's principal, Craig Speziale, 446 people prefer the name Ponte Vedra High School, while 40 people like the name Ponte Vedra Beach High School.

The poll results were unveiled at a committee meeting of about 30 parents, community members and students Wednesday night at Landrum Middle School. Speziale set up the committee to help sift through the poll results and make recommendations to the School Board about school names, a mascot and school colors. Marc Bugbey, a parent, said he likes the idea of naming the school for the community.

"I think the name Ponte Vedra High School says it all about our community where our kids are from," Bugbey said.

Coming in with about 30 votes were the names Ponte Vedra LeMaster High School and LeMaster High School, which, he said, could also be combined.

Committee member Doug Crane said some well-known families in Ponte Vedra Beach, such as the Davis and Stockton families, would like to see the school named for Ebbie LeMaster, the unofficial "mayor" of Ponte Vedra Beach, who died in 2006. …
