Surf on Our Turf; Pro Contest Comes to Tynemouth

THE good times will roll at Tynemouth when a top surfing contest finally comes to the region's coast.

A UK Pro Surf Tour event is set for Longsands Beach this Saturday and Sunday, organisers have told the Chronicle.

The respected competition will come as a boost after the O'Neill British Surfing Championships were cancelled last October due to lack of waves.

Tynemouth was overlooked completely for the championships in 2007, with the flagship event instead going to Newquay in Cornwall.

Steve Hudson, who runs the surf shop Tynemouth Surf Co at Longsands Beach, said the event will welcome some of the country's top stars in a 50-strong field.

"This is a huge deal for the North East," he said. "It's fantastic that the tour is coming here. Some really great surfers will be showing their talent."
