"THE best bit? When a woman puts her newly cut and dyed wig on for the first time, gives a toss of her head and says, 'I feel like a million dollars.'"

It is then that award-winning hairdresser Neville Ramsay understands why he continues to put himself through the emotional wringer working with cancer sufferers.

He is the first to admit that sometimes he becomes so emotional when faced with a client who has lost all her hair through illness, that he has to leave the private consultation room set aside for wig buyers at this salon in Sunderland, to have a weep.

"How do doctors do it?" he says. "I have worked with girls of 16 and 17 who have cancer and it's very emotional. After work there are times I will lie in bed and go, 'Lord, thanks for the life you've given me, thanks that I have such a great life.' It's working with people like this that you realise what a lot you've got to be grateful for.

"I never went into this job thinking it would be so heartbreaking. The only way I can cope is to go into flamboyant mode and make the clients laugh so that when they take their wig off they don't feel naked and raw.

"But the reward is seeing the change that comes over someone when they don one of our wigs for the first time. They have come to me devastated about their hair loss and the impact it has had on their life.

They have sat with me and cried and cried. Often they have gone from being a career orientated women to feeling about an inch high, their confidence has been so shattered.

"But then they will put the wig on, their head will come up, their boobs will be pushed out and they will feel 10 feet tall again."

Neville has been working with wigs for the last 10 years - first as an artistic accompaniment to his hair shows, and then five years ago he introduced them to the salon.
