Horse Racing: Geoff Calls Time on a Memorable Race Career

COCKNEY Rebel's owner Phil Cunningham led the tributes to Geoff Huffer following the announcement the Newmarket trainer is to retire.

Huffer, who was in his second stint having returned to the game in 2004, stunned racing with his exploits with the dual 2000 Guineas winner this season.

Cunningham, who paid only 30,000 guineas for the colt, will remember this summer for the rest of his life.

"It has been a difficult decision for Geoff," said Cunningham. "We had a meeting last Thursday when we talked things through and I told him that he is the only trainer based in Newmarket for 200 years to have trained a dual Classic winner. When you think of all the names before and still training today, it is some achievement.

Huffer said: "I've achieved my ambitions. I thought I was unlucky not to train a Classic winner with Persian Heights the last time I trained.

"I thought I'd come back and do it again and thank God everything went well. …
