Buying Land for Parking Supported; Jacksonville Beach Would Get Parcels between Third and Fourth Avenues North

JACKSONVILLE BEACH - The redevelopment agency has recommended the city buy roughly $4.8 million of land between Third and Fourth avenues north to provide parking for people who want to shop, dine and visit the fishing pier and beach.

The Community Redevelopment Agency voted 2-1 Monday in favor of purchasing the two parcels. Bill Hillegass voted against the proposal because he was disappointed with the price.

In its negotiations, the city settled on $2,380,000 for 16,901 square feet that Atkins Builders owns on the corner of Second Street and Third Avenue North. It also agreed to pay $2,487,500 for 19,602 square feet that South Pier LLC owns on the corner of Second Street and Fourth Avenue North.

The City Council will later have the final say on the property's purchase.

If the deal goes through, the land would be cleared and temporarily used for a parking lot, said City Planning Director Steve Lindorff. Later, when more money becomes available, the city may build a parking garage on the site, he said. …
