Coach Jack Del Rio's actions spoke louder than his words about wide receiver Matt Jones.

After Jones twice failed to catch fade patterns in the end zone last Sunday against Houston, Del Rio defended Jones.

"He's working hard. He's going to make plays for us and we're so close,'' Del Rio said.

Yet Jones was inactive as the third quarterback for the second time in three games during Monday night's loss to Indianapolis.

Jones, who also was inactive for the Denver game, has caught only eight passes in the four games he's played.

At the start of the game, Jones wasn't in uniform. But when David Garrard was injured in the second quarter, he put his uniform on.

With Jones inactive, John Broussard was the Jaguars' fourth receiver.


Defensive end Reggie Hayward, who was inactive last week with a hamstring injury, was active but didn't start.

The Jaguars went with Bobby McCray and Paul Spicer at defensive end. Hayward did see action in the game.

Spicer had two sacks during the first three quarters and also pressured Colts quarterback Peyton Manning on several other occasions

The Jaguars also opened the game with their base 4-3 defense instead of playing a nickel with a fifth defensive back. The Colts got two quick first downs against the defense, but the Jaguars then forced a punt.

On third-and-long, they went with nickel for the first time and Terry Cousin, the nickel back, blitzed and Manning threw an incomplete pass.

But the defense yielded touchdown drives of 66 and 76 yards on the next two drives. Both lasted 11 plays as the Colts built a 14-0 lead.


Quinn Gray has spent much of his career as the Jaguars' third-team quarterback. In his first four seasons, the undrafted quarterback from Florida A&M appeared in only three games. …
