FSU Names Proctor Interim AD; the Florida Legislator Will Be the Temporary Replacement for Hart

TALLAHASSEE - When Florida State president T.K. Wetherell realized some months ago that he might need to find a temporary replacement for athletic director Dave Hart, he called a man he has known for more than 40 years.

On Friday, Wetherell named Bill Proctor as FSU's interim athletic director.

Proctor, 74, the Flagler College chancellor and second-term legislator in the Florida House of Representatives, is scheduled to begin work on Nov. 5 as a special assistant to Wetherell. He will work closely with Hart, who announced his resignation Thursday, in a transitional phase through the end of the calendar year.

"Dave and I have had a very good relationship," said Proctor, who spoke with Hart by phone Friday. "He's been very cordial and helpful to making the transition. I'm hopeful that it won't be a very long transition. ... As I told Dr. Wetherell, I'll do what I can to bridge the gap."

Proctor, who chairs the executive committee of the Florida State athletic board, worked closely with Hart in developing the current athletic department budget. Yet it was Proctor's ties to Wetherell that made him an ideal candidate for the interim position as the school begins a national search for Hart's successor.

A member of FSU's 1955 football team, Proctor later spent three seasons on Bill Peterson's coaching staff, where he was responsible for recruiting Wetherell out of Daytona Beach.

Proctor also served as a mentor to a young FSU assistant coach named Bobby Bowden, and the two have remained close through the years.

Proctor also served as FSU's Dean of Men, a post he later held at Central Florida, where he hired Wetherell as his assistant dean.

"I've known Bill for 40 years," Wetherell said. "He is a man of high integrity. His credentials are impeccable.

"I think he will be helpful to us as the transition occurs, as well as when we move to the selection of a permanent athletic director. …
