CALLAHAN - A new organization wants to help Nassau County Animal Care and Control with its workload.

RAIN - Rescuing Animals in Nassau - is led by Director and Animal Control Officer Lynda Mixson, who formerly served as Fernandina Beach animal control director for three years.

Mixson said RAIN, which incorporated six months ago, will focus on advocacy, education and investigations for the entire county.

"We want to be considered more of a resource center, like an advocate for the animals," Mixson said. "We want to start a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, we want to start a very good educational program for the schools, and we would like to help the Animal Control center in Yulee and the Sheriff's Department with neglect and cruelty cases."

Sheriff Tommy Seagraves said Wednesday he expects to meet shortly with Mixson to discuss these services.

"We want to sit down and discuss what kind of program or services they will be able to offer," Seagraves said. "And then we can determine if it's something that will be beneficial for the Sheriff's Office to work with them and include into some sort of partnership. Anything that's trying to benefit us and retain healthy pets in our community is a positive."

While RAIN would not have the authority to take action against those involved in cruelty or neglect cases, Seagraves said RAIN could do preliminary investigations and act as a complaintant to start an investigation with the Sheriff's Office.

Three calls to Animal Control Director Brenda Rothwell seeking comment were unreturned at deadline.

RAIN will provide free countywide services, but it will be based in Callahan.

"We felt that there was a need for something on the westside," Mixson said. "With all of the newspaper articles and everything, it seemed like a lot of the animals and the complaints came in from the Callahan, Bryceville, Hilliard and Yulee area. …
