A ROW has broken out over car parking charges after Newcastle City

Council was accused of hitting drivers with higher costs than neighbouring Gateshead.

Increased charges came into force at several locations this week and city Conservatives claim these are placing a burden on commuters and could even drive away Christmas shoppers.

However, the council's Liberal Democrat leaders say the increases affect only a small number of parking spaces and are unlikely to have an impact on trade.

Jason Smith, chairman of Newcastle Conservatives without a seat on the council - said a worker parking from 9am to 5pm at Morden Street car park in the city centre will pay more than pounds 10 a day compared with pounds 2.50 in most Gateshead car parks.

"The increase may cost people who work in the city centre pounds 200 extra per year," he said.

Coun Nick Forbes, leader of the council's opposition Labour group, said: "I am concerned at the impact on businesses in the city centre. …
