NEW PRODUCT

IT LOOKS LIKE AN ICE CUBE TRAY, BUT IT'S NOT

For those who like their food a little more geometric comes a nifty little time-saver called the FoodCuber.

At first blush, it's hard to figure out just how the ice-cube-tray-on-steroids FoodCuber works.

Founder Lisa Brock explains on the company's Web site that she had the idea for the FoodCuber after reading about using old ice trays to store such things as chicken stock. As a single working mother of two children, she thought it would be nice to be able to build a little efficiency into the mealtime process.

She super-sized the idea and made the containers in 1/2-cup, 1-cup and 2-cup sizes that allow food to be portioned for later use.

Brock touts uses beyond just expediency that include diet management, pet food storage and time-savings for new parents.

So far, the stores in Florida selling the FoodCuber are limited, but online orders can be made at www.foodcuber.com ($7.49 for one tray or $19.95 for a set of three).

BOOKSHELF

'COOKING' WITH JAMES PETERSON

New on the bookshelf is Cooking by James Peterson, a 560-page tome of gastronomical proportions by the master chef and author.

It's $40 price tag may be intimidating at first, but Cooking is an instruction manual, a tips guide and a recipe box all rolled into one.

It is written in a way the novice will be able to understand and the experienced cook will appreciate, with detailed techniques that can help add a little more oomph to a meal.

Peterson certainly has the credentials, having taught himself to cook and authoring more than a dozen cookbooks.

He passes along a lot of the tools and tricks he has learned during the past 20 years, with rich illustrations using more than 1,500 photos and step-by-step explanations that make it fun to be in the kitchen.
