FROM the moment a digital clock ominously begins to tick down the seconds, it's clear that Saw IV, the latest viscera-drenched puzzle in the series, is a film concerned with time.

There is the shortness of time (90 minutes) for a detective to play Jigsaw's sick games; the ebb and flow of time as the film's chronology fractures in a miasma of flashbacks; and the complete waste of time that awaits anyone who endures Darren Lynn Bousman's bloodthirsty celebration of human suffering.

After wading through the entrails of Captivity, Hostel: Part II and Vacancy, the wanton carnage of the fourth Saw picture lacks some of the shock value of previous films.

Hyperactive editing doesn't help, rendering a couple of the elaborate death sequences an incomprehensible blur, and characters are sketched in such flimsy detail that their grisly demise doesn't matter a jot. Saw IV opens with the stomach-churning post mortem of evil Jigsaw (Bell), the deranged puppet master unable to escape the spectre of cancer. …
