Teacher Causes a Stir; COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS the People's Awards

DAVE HINDMARSH has been inspired by his students to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

The Middlesbrough College tutor, who has taught catering skills to students with learning difficulties and disabilities for four years, has raised a whopping pounds 5,800 for Mencap in that time.

Now he has been nominated as Champion Teacher in the Evening Gazette's Community Champions Awards.

Dave teaches the 1st Step to Catering Programme, teaching his students basic cooking skills and developing their communication, social and interactive skills.

The class is very popular. When it began there were 36 students. Now there are 56, plus a waiting list.

He began fundraising for Mencap three years ago and raised pounds 2,500 by taking part in a bike ride around China and gathered pounds 3,300 by abseiling down the Transporter Bridge.

Dave was nominated for the award by his colleague Steve Donnison.
