Rugby Union: MIXED FORTUNES; Hot Stuff from Hammond in U11s' Brave Battle ACKLAM

Article excerpt

THE Under-11s hosted Guisborough for three short-period games.

In the first, both sides competed well to gain good ground, but neither could score due to some good tackling. Joe Jordon came closest for Acklam, grounding the ball inches short of the line.

Shane Hammond showed some of his multi-talents with some elusive running, with Cameron Hipkins pulling the strings at fly-half.

In the second game, Guisborough capitalised on poor defending to take a deserved lead and, when Jack Wellard was forced off the field due to a clash of heads, the flood gates opened and Guisborough won 26-0.

In the third tussle Acklam started at a different level playing some good rugby.

Tom Dawson, playing his first game back from illness, made some good ground, Sebi Connors and Bradley Gatter made good tackles but they couldn't prevent Guisborough taking the lead from a well worked try from the full-back.

Acklam came back through Zak Perera who, for the second week running, was man of the match. Score: Guisborough 7 Acklam 5.

THE Under-13s met Middlesbrough in a typical derby match with both sides competing strongly in a game played in the true spirit of the sport.

Acklam looked the stronger team in the first half and they took a well-deserved 0-5 half-time lead through a well-worked team try which Ricky Scott scored.

In the second half Boro improved, but Acklam took a 0-10 lead when Peter Martin crossed.

Boro scored shortly afterwards to make it 5-10. The game was in the last throws when Middlesbrough hit back with two late tries to make the final score 15-10. Dominic Breeze was the man-of-the-match. THE Under-15s hosted Boro in the first of the derby matches of the season and won 54-5.

Acklam opened the scoring when they won their scrum and

Gordon Brudenell charged over to make it 5-0. …
