ROBYN SKINNER reviews David Gray at the Carling Academy in Newcastle

IT WAS bitterly cold as concert goers waited around the block for their pounds 27 entrance.

After surviving the bouncers and the coat-check woman, frazzled is one word to describe those entering the Carling Academy last night.

That is until one bouncy, blackdressed man owned the stage and proceeded to pry the crowd's clenched hands into welcoming palms with his guitar strings.

David Gray opened his first show on his A World to Me Tour with the track Shine.

With each song the tension was shed from the audience's shoulders, who even offered a collective 'awwww...' for the song A New Day at Midnight, which David said he wrote when his first child was born.

After three songs and to one audience member's dismay, David opted for a stool while at the mic.

It's all right, said Manchester-born David, Radio One has stopped playing his songs so he's allowed to sit down. …
