The celebration began even before the celebration began.

Fleming Island High School's football players started slapping hands with each other on the field as the seconds ticked down on the Golden Eagles' first district championship last Friday, a 28-21 win over Gainesville Buchholz. Senior quarterback Ryan Aplin jumped high and bumped chests with any teammate he could find. Loud cheers roared from the home side of Fleming Island Stadium. And when the game ended, Golden Eagles students and fans stormed the field.

Fleming Island offensive coordinator Derek Chipoletti was splashed with a Gatorade dousing.

The Golden Eagles rallied from 14 points down to defeat Buchholz, finish the District 3-5A part of their schedule with a perfect 3-0 mark and clinch a home game for the first round of the Class 5A playoffs on Nov. 16.

"You can't describe this feeling," Aplin said.

Aplin threw for 280 yards, including a 43-yard TD pass to Austin Sweatt and a 54-yard pass completion to Dee Friesen in the fourth quarter, setting up Montory Bellamy's game-winning 6-yard TD run. …
