NORTHUMBERLAND - based Helen Lawrence stormed to victory in yesterday's Heaton Harriers Town Moor Memorial 10k Road Race and in doing so picked up a pounds 100 bonus prize for breaking the course record.

Despite strong winds to contend with the Wirral AC athlete pulled out all the stops in the run in to the line in the Exhibition Park to win in 36min 30 secs, shaving just one second of the previous best set in 2004 by Ranleigh's Laura Shelley.

"I knew I was in with a chance for I had ran sub 36 minutes in my last race but I didn't know it was such a touch and go thing because it was very windy," said Lawrence.

Chester-le-Street's Tracy Laws finished in second place with teammate Maxine Czarnecka third.

The men's race was won by Claremont's Peter Newton who got the better of Ryan Stephenson with a mile to go, to win in 33:17 after the pair had pulled well clear of the near 400-strong field. …
