Heavy Snowfall Gives Early Lift to the Ski Season; Good Forecast: Prince William and Kate Middleton in Switzerland, Where Heavy Snow Is Predicted

THIS time last year the slopes were green Alpine meadows with hardly asnowflake in sight.

But heavy snowfalls over the past weekwith more forecast for the next few daysmean that dozens of resorts are now enjoying their best start to the season indecades.

So far, the heaviest falls have been in Austria, where Kitzbuhel opened lastweekend a month ahead of schedule and earlier than ever before.

Many of the country's resorts have had a week of almost continuous snow, withKaprun recording 251cm on its upper slopes.

Much of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps saw their first snow at the weekend.

Verbier is reported to have half a metre of fresh powder snow. Resorts inSweden and Germany have also opened. Temperatures are also low enough forresorts to start making artificial snow.

Arnie Wilson, editor of Ski and Board magazine, who was in Solden, Austria,last weekend, said: "There is serious snow to be found in the Tirol. …
