A PARALYSED teenager is heading to China in the hope of a miracle cure that will help him walk again.

Danny Howard was left fighting for his life in intensive care after a horrific road accident when he was 15.

The gritty teenager pulled through but, two years on, he has been left paraplegic and in a wheelchair.

Now he and his family are pinning their hopes on breakthrough stem cell research in China which could lead to a better future.

Danny's mum Carol said: "We all want a miracle but at the end of the day any improvement they can give him is better than nothing. Basically they have said they can do it - the best case scenario is that he might be able to walk again."

Danny, of Granwood Road, Eston, was left fighting for his life after being struck by a car in November 2005.

He received multiple injuries in the accident on the A174 near Lazenby village.

These included severe head injuries, a serious spinal injury, a broken leg and broken shoulder blade.

His mum, and dad Andrew, feared the worst as he lay in hospital. Doctors warned he might never walk again.

His mum said: "Nobody expected him to survive."

There were also fears he might be left brain damaged, although luckily this wasn't the case.

But with Danny desperate to walk again, his family began hunting for a cure - a search which led them to a hospital in China where doctors say they have developed a comprehensive programme for spinal cord injury patients.

The procedure combines both stem cell activation and stimulation treatment, and stem cell injections.

Now Carol and Andrew are trying to raise thousands of pounds for the eight-week treatment programme at the Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital.

She said: "We reckon to cover everything would cost pounds 25,000.

"We are going to do things to try to raise the money. …
