THIS has been a stop-start season for Boro for so many reasons, and now we have another international break.

Do these breaks help us or not? If Mido is fit to return against Aston Villa, then perhaps it does help.

The point won at Bolton had to be battled for, but those who went will tell you Bolton were woeful and there for the taking.

The quality in the game was abysmal and it makes you wonder about the so-called best league in the world.

But it was great to see Mani back in action at Bolton. He nearly got booked before he had even touched the ball!

The events of the next few days will determine whether we will be watching England, and/or Scotland, on television in the European Championships next summer.

With 20 minutes to go in Russia, I am sure the headline writers were already tipping England to win Euro 2008. Then suddenly the wheels fell off - McClaren must go.

So if Steve is the latest sacrificial lamb, following on from so many other good managers and coaches who have failed to turn the "great world class players" we have into a winning team, are there any others out there who, like me, have another theory?

Is it just possible that these pounds 100,000 per week superstars like Rooney, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Terry are perhaps not quite as good as the media, their agents and their pay packets suggest?

Yes, they are all very good players, but playing in teams predominantly made up of real quality internationals, who perhaps make them look better than they really are.

Against Russia, hardly the world's greatest, they were made to look ordinary and not for the first time. However things pan out over the next week, we will probably go back to being potential winners or manager less.

Quite ironic that up the road, the Scots still have it within their own hands to qualify. …
