SWIMMING sensation Jemma Lowe has been nominated for the BBC Wales Carwyn James Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Hartlepool-born Jemma, who is a member of the Borough of Stockton Swimming Scheme (BOSSS) and Tees Active Sports Academy, represented Wales at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the Junior European Championships and World Youth Championships.

Jemma, 17, qualifies to represent Wales as her father Mike is Welsh.

The proud dad said: "This is fantastic news and Jemma's nomination is a tremendous honour.

"The family are really looking forward to the ceremony, but Jemma realises there is a tremendous amount of hard training before the Olympic trials in March."

The talented teenager has had a fantastic year, and in August, at the National Championships in Sheffield, she set a new British senior record for the 100m butterfly of 58.73 seconds.

She is also the Welsh record holder for the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly. …
