KATE McCANN has had drug tests to prove she was not on medication whenher daughter vanished.

She did it to refute claims she was "mentally unstable" and takinganti-depressants when Madeleine went missing on 3 May.

Portuguese police had been working on a theory that she killed her daughterbecause she could not cope. Results of a toxicology test on her hair samplesshow no evidence of drugs in her body over the past eight months, her legalteam announced today. Her two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie have also beentested to show they were never given sedatives by Mrs McCann or her husbandGerry.

This is an attempt to scotch accusations that Madeleine may also have beengiven sedatives and died of an accidental overdose. The drug tests on Kate formpart of a dossier of evidence compiled by the McCanns which they claimdemolishes the police case against them. Edward Smethurst, the lawyerco-ordinating the McCanns' defence, said: "Hair grows by about a centimetre amonth so if you have eight centimetres of hair, you can test for drugs goingback eight months. …
