Hokies Earn Another Shot at BC; Saturday's ACC Title Game Will Be a Rematch of a Regular-Season Thriller

Boston College has been playing football since 1893 but has never won a conference championship.

To secure that piece of history, first-year coach Jeff Jagodzinski's Eagles will have to fend off revenge-minded Virginia Tech in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

Five weeks ago, the Eagles rode the right arm of quarterback Matt Ryan to a dramatic 14-10 victory over the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va. Ryan's two touchdown passes in the final two minutes likely cost Frank Beamer's team a chance to play for the BCS national championship.

That's enough to have Beamer, whose Hokies secured the ACC Coastal Division title with Saturday's 33-21 win at Virginia, concerned about a rematch with Ryan and the Eagles.

"You've got to be careful what you wish for," Beamer said. "After Boston College got us in the last couple of minutes in a tough loss, you said, 'We'd like to meet those guys again.' Now that it's time to meet them, you've got to figure out how to beat them, and that's not easy."

An Orange Bowl berth is at stake in the first ACC championship game matchup of former Big East members. They have identical 10-2 records.

"Familiarity is a good thing and a bad thing," Jagodzinski said. "I don't think it's going to be any surprise to us what they're going to do on defense, and I don't think it's going to be any surprise to Virginia Tech what we do on defense, and vice versa on offense."

As a former NFL assistant, Jagodzinski is no stranger to rematches during the course of a season.

Beamer has never encountered a rematch in his 27 seasons as a head coach, but he doesn't anticipate it will create problems.

"I think you go to your [previous] game and look at that one and make your adjustments off that," he said. "This one will be a different game in every way. …
