RISE AND WHINE

BEND OVER AND COUGH. THIS MIGHT FEEL COLD.

In case you didn't see it last week, The Wall Street Journal did a nice job reporting on "subrogation." Here's how it works. You sign up for health insurance through your work. You get hurt. You sue whoever hurt you. Depending on the insurance plan you signed up for, your employer's plan can come back and take any money you win in the lawsuit.

The companies claim it keeps them from paying the same bills that you are paying with the money you won. Of course, the companies pay just enough for minimal treatment for you and keep the rest of the money.

I used to wonder how CEOs could force workers to pay more for insurance while trying to outdo each other on multimillion dollar compensation and bonuses. I have a thought now: Maybe the chiefs see the golden goose is about to pop and they're trying to grab all they can on the way out the door.

OVERHEARD

From the mouths of babes . . .

"They're so silly."

- My 4-year-old daughter, commenting on Sam's Club, which put up Christmas decorating supplies before Halloween.

"Can we go look at the Christmas decorations?"

- My 4-year-old, about 10 seconds later.

One of the classic moments in Ferris Bueller's Day Off features a couple of valets taking a Ferrari out for a spin on the highway. Turns out the scene's not so far off the mark.

CBS5 in San Francisco reported last week that it followed valets around North Beach on a Saturday night. It saw them use a customer's Toyota 4Runner to ferry valets to outlying cars about three-quarters of a mile away. The total: nine round trips in two hours.

The piece de resistance: One of the valets drove a Porsche SUV to pick up a pizza.

Of course, that only happens in San Francisco. …
