Monday After getting up at 5.45am and taking Ruby, our six-month-oldred-setter puppy, for a walk, I had hoped for a smooth start to the morning.However, the Five TV channel called to ask if I had a family house for sale,with owners happy to be interviewed about the property market, along withmyself, of course.

I knew just the couple, so was soon round at their fourbedroom house in Bromleyto await the TV crew. In the meantime, I sent a text to a few dozen selectfriends and family to warn them of my impending stardom. All went like a dream.

At 5.15pm I had a call from the TV production assistant to say she was sorry,but the item had been trimmed, so all that remained of my interview was a shotof the back of my head.

Then my wife called to say that Ruby had eaten our decorator's spectacles.

Tuesday

The phone rang at 1amit was the fire brigade to tell me that our Bromley office was on fire.

I raced down there to see smoke billowing out of the building.

The roof had collapsed. In shock, my teeth were chattering so much I couldhardly speak to the police. The office was wrecked but it could have beenworse. The people living in the flat upstairs were unharmed, although theirhome was ruined.

The police stood guard all day while fingerprints were taken and evidencegathered. We managed to salvage the mainframe of the computer and transfer itto the Sidcup office, where we had to install extra desks for the Bromleystaff. I was overwhelmed by the generous offers of help from other traders inthe town.

The Sidcup phones were in meltdown (not literally this time). Despiteeverything, it was business as usual. We had three new flats for letting.Within an hour of putting them on the website we had six calls, resulting inthree viewings. Two viewers gave us holding deposits on the spot. …
