Football: The Signs Are Defoe Will Keep Earning His Spurs

TOTTENHAM head coach Juande Ramos insists Jermain Defoe's contract negotiations will not prevent him selecting the striker.

Defoe's current deal runs out at the end of next season, and chairman Daniel Levy wants him to commit to Spurs.

Ramos is happy to continue playing Defoe, but the 25-year-old has a cold and will miss tonight's UEFA Cup clash at against Aalborg.

Ramos said: "Jermain has indicated he likes the club and wants to stay here.

"There are some difficulties with the contract but they are nothing major, and they should agree a deal soon.

"If Jermain is in form and playing well he will continue playing. Sport and contracts are two different matters."

Younes Kaboul has a groin injury and will miss the Aalborg clash - saving Ramos from a difficult decision, because the young Frenchman has been guilty of errors since arriving from Auxerre and was at fault for West Ham's goal against Spurs in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ramos has highlighted the need for experience and leadership in his defence, but insists he will not sign players out of desperation during the January transfer window. …
