GATESHEAD suffered a third consecutive defeat in the UniBond League Premier Division but still remain fourth from top. Marine, one place above the Tynesiders, scored early and late to secure a crucial 2-1 victory in front of a crowd of 214 at the International Stadium.

Marine went ahead after just three minutes as Paul Woolcott beat goalkeeper Peter Keen. David Southern, skipper Steven Bowey and Graeme Armstrong all went near before Ian Bogie's side restored parity four minutes into the second period.

Marine goalkeeper Andy Banks was beaten by a Craig Baxter cross to raise hopes of a Gateshead victory but 11 minutes from the end, they conceded the second goal which proved to be the winner.

Karl O'Donnell was Marine's hero but late in the game Southern almost grabbed a point for Gateshead.

Newcastle Blue Star manager Tommy Cassidy had predicted that if his side repeated the flowing football they produced in their previous game, they would be in with a good chance of victory in Saturday's UniBond League Division One North clash at Bridlington Town. …
