Football: Thirlwell to Be Eased into Action

JOHN Ward is looking forward to finally being able to select captain Paul Thirlwell for Carlisle United but will resist the temptation at Swindon Town in League One tonight, writes STUART RAYNER.

The former Sunderland midfielder came through a reserve team game against Blackpool last week, his first outing since injuring his calf at Swansea in mid-September.

But despite being excited at the prospect of having Thirlwell available for the first time in his Brunton Park career, Ward is aiming to ease the 28-year-old back, with Saturday's trip to Northampton Town a more likely comeback.

"I know he's a good player because I saw him when I was at other clubs," said the former Cheltenham Town manager. "People talk very highly of him - so he has a lot to live up to!"

Defender Danny Livesey should be available, however, after having stitches removed from an eye wound.

Chester-le-Street-born Danny Graham is pushing for a recall after scoring in the reserves' 2-2 draw. …
