GEREMI hopes to play a captain's role when he leads Newcastle United out against Arsenal at St James's Park tonight.

Sam Allardyce has plenty of options when he names his team, but Geremi is banking on being in that starting line-up - and if he is he will again wear the captain's armband.

And it is something the former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Middlesbrough midfielder is relishing.

He said today: "I am captain and as captain I need to remind the players of things from time to time.

"I had to say to some players who were very down after the Blackburn defeat to keep their heads up. That is really important.

"There are a lot of matches coming, especially this month, and we are all concerned that we have only taken one point from the last five games.

"Everyone is aware of this, and hopefully we can start taking points tonight. We need to get a good result."

United have suffered two maulings in their last two home games against Portsmouth and Liverpool, but the supporters will be behind them all the way against Arsene Wenger's brilliant young side. …
