CONRAD Black may be a bit nervous as he prepares to hear his fate inChicago next week, but here's Boris Johnson to the rescue. The Tory mayoralcandidate's letter to Judge Amy St Eve, published by the Londoner for the firsttime, makes clear just why he holds Black in such high regard.

The letter is one of about 100 written by friends and acquaintances, includingWilliam Hague and Annabel Goldsmith, submitted to the court as Black faces apossible jail sentence of 10 years.

Boris, famously editor of The Spectator during Conrad's reign as proprietor ofthe Telegraph group, says he is writing because "I have been asked to supplysame boat ... ? some kind of testimonial as to his personal and intellectualqualities".

Sadly, the Tory MP is uncharacteristically restrained in his assessment and hisletter contains none of his usual Bo-Jo flourishes. In fact, it is almost as ifit is written by a careful politician rather than the free-wheeling entertainerwe all know and love. …
