Pressure on Pubs Boosts Brulines

TOUGHER times for the pub trade is helping fuel growth for award-winnng Teesside company Brulines The Stockton-based firm, which specialises in equipmentwhich allows breweries to monitor the amount and quality of beer sold from pumps, has seen a growth in its business as the industry strives to be as cost effective as possible in a tough economic climate.

"Pubs are facing more economic pressure," said Brulines' chief executive James Dickson. "Better information makes then more effective, meaning they can squeeze as much profit as possible out of their business."

Brulines has also benefited from a number of sector and legislative factors. The smoking bans and the increasing requirements on all leisure operators to improve the quality and efficiency of their offering has led to an increased demand the company's products, regardless of any potential consumer slow down.

The news came as the company reported a 58% rise in half year pre-tax profits - climbing from pounds 1.38m to pounds 2.18m.

Turnover for the half year fell from pounds 9.24m in 2006 to pounds 8.06m this year - but thiswas due to a higher number of installations in 2006 which boosted figures.

Brulines announced in September a pounds 3.8m acquisition deal of North Yorkshire-based Nucleus Data Holdings.

The deal, given the green light by the Office of Fair Trading recently, is set to be completed in the new year.

"That deal will give us most of our growth for next year," said Mr Dickson.

"Itwill also bring us somemore good people into the business."

Nucleus Data Holdings is based in Tadcaster and employs 40.
