Things get hot in Chelsea as a flat catches fire, a vendor's wife stripsoff and our agent gets stuck in a lift ... again


I took a work experience student with me on my first appointment to see howwork is progressing on a flat being refurbished in Eaton Terrace.

After much arm waving and mime, the eastern European builders understood whatwe were there for and waved us into the lift. Seconds later, between twofloors, it ground to a halt. A typical London experience, I explained to mydoubtful-looking student. He had plenty of time to think out his future inestate agency as we waited an hour to be freed.

It was as well he was not with me last week, when I was asked to value a flattenanted by two high-flying chaps. What I took at first to be some complicatedfilming equipment in the spare bedroom turned out, on closer inspection, to bea sex frame, with a swing and shackles.


I met up with an old pal to tell him over lunch how I had taken part in theThree Peaks Challenge climbing Snowdonia,

Scafell and Ben Nevis in 24 hours. We had begun climbing Snowdonia at 8am andgot back down at 11.30am, then drove to Scafell in a minibus. I was about toget to the most thrilling section of my story when I was interrupted by thesound of sirens and fire engines roaring around Sloane Square.

Almost immediately, a call on my mobile informed me the flat that was on firenearby was one we were selling.

I raced around therethe mountain-climbing training kicking into find builders working on the Royal Hospital opposite had seen the flames andalerted the emergency services.

Our client arrived as the fire was being doused. He had been clearing out theflat and had left a pile of papers on top of the hob, then accidentally nudgedone of the controls before going out. …
