Now Lord Looter Heads for Garrick Club Humiliation; Not Welcome at Piccadilly Establishment: Fraudster Conrad Black and Jeremy Paxman

JUST BEFORE he was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, ConradBlack boasted that he was still a member of several top London clubs. Speakingto him via the internet at a book signing at Waterstone's in Piccadilly, Iasked him whether he was still a member of the Garrick, despite being groundedin the US.

"Yes, I'm a member of the Garrick, the Athenaeum, White's, the Beefsteak, andwhat's that one that belongs to a duke? Pratt's, and many other clubs besides,all around the world," he fumed.

That may have been the case then, but not for much longer. For I understandmembers of the Garrick have decided that it is time Lord Black was stripped ofhis salmon and cucumber club tie. Among those plotting for his removal are twojudges. "I think he should be booted out immediately," says one. "I don't thinkmembers of the Garrick would be very happy to have a convicted felon as amember of the club," opines the other.

How Black manages to afford the annual subscription fee to all his clubs is apertinent question. …
