KENYA exploded into riots today as protesters and police fought runningstreet battles after both presidential candidates claimed victory in anelection marred by violence and allegations of fraud.

At least 13 people died as rioters, armed with machetes and clubs, flooded onto the streets, setting fire to vehicles, shops and barricades in protest overthe re-election of Mwai Kibaki as president.

Police hit back, firing shots into the air and tear gas into Nairobi's slums.

The violence flared after Mr Kibaki was sworn back in as president afterclaiming the highest number of votes.

But the main opposition rival, Raila Odinga, also claimed victory, andannounced a ceremony at which he would be declared "the people's president".

The ceremony was immediately banned by authorities, with hundreds of riotpolice deployed to prevent it taking place. Mr Odinga's supporters pledged todie in their campaign to kick out Kibaki and replace him with their candidate.

James Onyango, 24, who lives in Nairobi's Kibera shanty town, said: "We havebeen rigged out, we are not going to accept defeat. We are ready to die andwe're ready for serious killings. …
