A BODY wrapped in ropes was today pulled out of the River Tyne.

Concerns had been raised for the safety of a man in his 20s who had parked his car near the river in South Shields.

A search was launched and at 4.30am this morning the man's body was found in the water near Mill Dam, South Shields.

Rescuers say the body was trapped in ropes, although it is not clear whether he became tangled in them in the water or before he fell in.

Adrian Don, spokesman for Tynemouth RNLI Lifeboat, said: "Tynemouth RNLI's volunteer lifeboat crew carried out a search of the south bank of the River Tyne in a pattern taking tides and current into account, while South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade also searched along the shore.

"At approximately 4.30am a body was found in the river, trapped in ropes near Mill Dam.

"It's a sad outcome and everyone at Tynemouth RNLI would like to express their condolences to the man's family. …
