MANY Teesside athletes have been building up their fitness over Christmas for the North East Indoor Championships at the Gateshead Indoor EIS centre this weekend.

Middlesbrough AC, in particular, are sending a strong team of medal hopefuls.

At the youngest level, under-13, Patrick O'Connor competes in the 60m hurdles, 60m sprint, high jump and long jump.

He is joined in the long jump by Sam Norton who also contests the 60m and shot putt.

Matthew Routh and Jack Farrow also compete in the 60m.

In the girls section of this age group, Rachel Highfield goes in the 60m.

Most competitive age group in the championships should be the under-15 girls where double North-east under-13 champion from last year, Alice Hurwood, is competing in the 60m hurdles, 60m sprint and long jump.

Also competing in the 60m are Tara Newmarch, Eleanor Mullen, Katy Farrow and Hannah Seagrave.

For the boys in this age group Richard Hodgson goes in the 60m and Joel Dixon competes in the high jump.

Moving up to under-17 level, Ashley Wood contests no fewer than five events competing in the 60m hurdles, 60m spring, long jump, high jump and triple jump.

Making the 60m one of the most anticipated events in this age group, Wood will be joined by North-east champions Kate Welford and Jayme Norton as well as UK schools representative Jess Kennedy.

Hoping to spring a surprise will be Laura Noble and Sofyia Pela of King's Academy.

In the girls field events, UK schools bronze medallist Chloe Gill competes in the triple jump and long jump along with Ashleigh Stone.

In the under-17 men's age group the 60m will be contested by Joe Cox (All Saints), Chuck Anyaegbuna (Yarm School), Phil Hay, Sean McCartney and Nihki Ncube.

Cox and Anyaegbuna also compete in the long jump and shot putt. The under-20 age group is headed by reigning double North-east champion Charlie Dryden who will be hoping to defend his long and triple jump titles from last year. …
