MEDICAL research and repairs to a Victorian church are both benefiting from money raised at a festival held in a Northumberland village.

The four-day Northumbrian Festival at Stannington, near Morpeth, last August - organised by a local committee and the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies - raised pounds 20,000.

Yesterday pounds 10,000 was handed over to Prof Steve Proctor at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for the Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant 2000 charity, which funds leukaemia research.

The remaining pounds 10,000 will help pay for stone restoration at St Mary's Church in Stannington as part of a four-year fundraising campaign which has already brought in more than pounds 280,000.

The festival, called Joy of Creation, was held in the village church and school, after being organised by church wardens Edna Beveridge and Jeannie Dungait. It included flower displays, a Northumbrian concert, a "Songs of Praise" evening, Northumbrian pipers, piano recitals, arts and crafts demonstrations, a farmers' market and children's events. …
