GREG Halford admits he has been frustrated by his failure to hold down a regular first-team place at Sunderland, but that has not stopped him from insisting Roy Keane needs to increase the competition for places in the squad during the January transfer window.

"I don't mind sitting around and waiting for a little bit and seeing what happens.

"But it is in my thoughts that if come next season I'm not getting the games I will go out on loan somewhere but it's now I'm thinking about and trying to get in the team for Sunday."

Halford played in a central midfield role for the reserves against local rivals Newcastle earlier this week but he still sees himself primarily as a rightback. …
