Football: Sellars' Call to Play the Geordie Way

SCOTT SELLARS today insisted that whoever takes over the Newcastle United job from departed boss Sam Allardyce must tap into the Geordie mentality when it comes to the tactics board.

The Yorkshire-born winger is something of a cult hero on Tyneside after his contribution to Kevin Keegan's Entertainers and will never be forgotten for his winning goal against Sunderland in 1993, which won the Tyne-Wear derby in United's promotion season.

Sellars' career on Tyneside only came to an end with the arrival of superstar David Ginola, yet he is always handed a warm reception on his visits to Newcastle.

And he told the Chronicle today: "Newcastle is simply one of those clubs where you have to give the fans what they crave - attractive attacking football.

"It is the same at Spurs and West Ham. The fans won't settle for anything less."

Sellars knows all about the good times at St James's Park and helped United into Europe when they shocked the footballing world to finish third in their first season in the top flight. …
