ALTHOUGH the temperatures have been cold but acceptable for January, the recent rainfall has flooded many of the region's rivers to the extent that fishing has been poor on running waters.

At Bassetts the best fish out this week was a common carp 4lb 8oz by Mark Smith Snr, but on Lookout Lake a mixed bag of ide, skimmers, carp and quality perch to 3lb 1oz, made for a great day's angling for Lee Johnston. Bowes has been producing 10-plus fish in a half-day session, with Chris Abbot recording some good successful outings recently.

The River Swale at Gatenby was in great form for Middlesborough AC's Fur & Feather Shield last week with only an ounce separating the top two weights. Organiser Jeff Herbett, fishing under the RSPS banner, found eleven chub and a single grayling for 36lb 14oz, ahead of John Leyland whose 14-chub tally weighed only 1oz less at 36lb 13oz..

Jim Prescott of Northallerton won Sunday's Open on Woodlands with an impressive weight of 60lb 11oz of carp and tench, taken on ledgered corn, whilst the Open Match at Bowes on Sunday saw Chris Owers win with Angel 9lb 12oz from peg 1. ahead of John Foster with 4lb 10oz and Dave Hodgson with 4lb 3oz. …
