NOW that Sam Allardyce has gone (and we wish him well), let the new boss get to work on building the team and fulfilling the clear vision he has for Newcastle United.

For more than 48 years my husband has followed Newcastle through thick and thin. Like many United fans, he has managed the team from the sidelines over the years and what a great manager he would have made. Managing Newcastle must be the dream of many men and boys of the North East, because football to these men is more than a game and has its roots in the poverty and community spirit that was inherited from the war years - a sense of camaraderie that replaced what many men had found in the wars when they had been away from their families.

It gave them a sense of purpose and hope for the future, as well as an appreciation of the value of teamwork.
