STEWART Downing has confirmed he would be interested in a move to Tottenham - but wants the issue resolved quickly.

Spurs are reportedly preparing a bid upwards of pounds 8m for the Middlesbrough midfielder but the England international has long been linked with the White Hart Lane outfit and is growing tired of the speculation.

The 23-year-old said last night: "I am aware and flattered by the interest from Tottenham. But until Middlesbrough and Tottenham agree terms I remain a Middlesbrough player and am fully committed to helping Gareth Southgate and the team any way I can.

"I hope this situation is resolved sooner rather than later as all the speculation is affecting me and I would like to draw a line under the situation and focus fully on my football career."

After Saturday's superb battling draw against Liverpool, Boro boss Gareth Southgate reaffirmed his determination to keep the England international at the Riverside.

Southgate confirmed there has been interest from other clubs in Downing, though "nothing out of the ordinary". Reports from White Hart Lane suggest that is about to change. Southgate said: "There's a lot of speculation about Stewart at the moment, but that's all it is, speculation. We haven't had any bids for Stewart. How would we react to a massive bid? It's impossible to say. We haven't had a ridiculous bid for him.

"We get inquiries throughout the year for players. As far as Stewart is concerned we have probably had greater interest in him in the past."

There was a belief within the national media on Saturday that Downing might have played his last game for Boro, after helping them record the valuable draw. If Boro do buckle under the weight of a big bid and agree to allow Downing to leave, it will give Southgate more power to his elbow as he tries to strengthen his goal-shy attack. …
