Murray's Delight at Quickfire GB Return; Young Gun Gets Call to Link Up for Lisbon Trip

EUROPEAN Cross - Country team gold medallist Ross Murray is off on his travels again after being selected to compete in Portugal at the end of the month.

The 17-year-old Gateshead Harrier is included in a GB under-20 four-man team for the prestigious Lisbon International on January 27.

And that comes just seven weeks after his international breakthrough at the European Championships in Toro, Spain.

It's been a whirlwind winter campaign so far for the pupil of St Thomas More RC, North Tyneside, who has lightly raced since opening his season in the National Cross - Country Relays in Mansfield.

After Mansfield he and his coach John Stevenson decided to take a chance in the trials in Liverpool for the European Championships.

And he came up trumps, finishing fifth which earned him a place in the team for Spain.

Now, despite being the youngest once again in the squad, he picks up a second vest in quick succession.

Naturally, Murray is excited to be given the thumbs up so early after making his international debut, with the race coming at the right time just before important domestic competitions.

"I'm really over the moon to get another taste of European competition," said Murray, who plans to warm up for the trip with an outing in the Durham Cross-Country Relays on Saturday.

"I wasn't overawed in Spain, but I felt I didn't tactically run a good race. The race in Portugal will give me that bit more experience of competing on the international stage.

"Making the team for the Europeans was a bonus because it wasn't in our plans at the start of the season, but when the opportunity came in the Trials I took it and, surprisingly, managed to get my place.

"Most of our plans were all about races after Christmas and that hasn't changed. This weekend I'll run in the Durham Relays on the back of a good week's training. …
