PAWEL Abbott will go under the knife this week in the latest interruption to his injury-hit Darlington career.

The Quakers' record signing returned to the side in mid-November after two months out with a knee injury. But after starting in Tuesday's 3-0 League Two win at Morecambe, Abbott has finally had to accept he needs surgery to cure the problem.

"He's been holding off having it done because we asked him to keep playing, and he has done that, which has been brave of him," said manager Dave Penney. "But it's restricting him and he's missed a lot of traini ng."

The 26-year-old will have an operation to trim cartilage and drain fluid from his knee. It could keep him out for anything from a week to a month. Since making his pounds 100,000 move from Swansea City in the summer, he has started just 11 league games.

Meanwhile, Carlisle United newboy Evan Horwood has revealed the role Paul Murray and Tony Caig played in coaxing him to Brunton Park. …
