MIDDLESBROUGH is fast becoming a frontrunner in the digital and creative industries. As well as the annual Animex festival from February 4 - 8, there's a number of other exciting events going on over the next weeks, as this special feature explains...

Cineworld to host major conference

THE prestigious Northern Screenwriters Conference (NSC) comes to Middlesbrough in early March. This two-day event, aimed at attracting the region's emerging screenwriters, will be hosted on March 4 and 5 at Cineworld in Middlesbrough town centre.

It follows a highly successful one-day event held in the town last year which attracted top writing talent such as Tony Grisoni (Tideland, Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas), Peter Straughan (Sixty-Six, A Christmas Carol), and Lisa Holdsworth (New Tricks, Fat Friends).

Tony Grisoni said that it was the best one-day event he had ever attended, which is high praise for a man who is much in demand at such events.

The high quality of speakers and efficient operation of the event received much praise. In addition, all the speakers have pledged their support for this year's NSC.

The conference aims to help writers improve their work and working practices so they can secure and sustain employment as a screenwriter for television and cinema. Other media will be examined including interactive media/gaming and radio.

Delegates will hear from some of the country's leading screenwriters who will take part in panel discussions, present case studies of their working methods, and run practical workshops. Confirmed speakers include Jimmy McGovern (The Street, Cracker), Danny Brocklehurst (Sorted, Shameless) and Lisa Holdsworth (New Tricks, Waterloo Road).

Tickets cost just pounds 40 for an earlybird deal booked before January 31 (pounds 50 from February 1). For further details contact Scott Illingworth at Middlesbrough Council's arts development team. Email:
